Can Martí’s location makes it the perfect base for exploring the area and enjoying a wide range of activities, within easy reach of both beaches and mountain areas.
Some of the highlights are listed below:
Albera Natural Area of National Interest
The Paratge Natural d’Interès Nacional de l’Albera is a protected natural area located to the northeast of Alt Empordà in which to enjoy the abundant native plant and wildlife.
Twenty Romanesque churches, in a variety of states of preservation, can be found scattered throughout the Albera, ranging from modest pre-Romanesque hermitages to the splendour of the St. Quirze de Colera monastery. Most are only accessible on foot.
Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park
Formed by a series of lakes, grassland meadows and floodplains at the confluence of the Muga and Fluvià rivers, this area is a heaven for wildlife, particularly for aquatic birds. There are two areas which are open to visitors: the route which starts out at Cortalet or the Vilaüt route. Both routes provide the opportunity to observe a wide variety of wildlife (especially birdlife) and feature many stops along the way to sit and watch the fabulous landscape. Another attraction is the CARFA Center (Native Fauna Care and Breeding Centre). The area benefits from a total of 17 wildlife observatories/hides.
Cap de Creus Natural Park
The Cap de Creus peninsula constitutes the last spur of the Pyrenees and the easternmost point of the Iberian Peninsula. The coast is rough and rugged with impressive cliffs and isolated coves. The Cap de Creus Natural Park provides the opportunity for visitors to enjoy a multitude of recreational activities and tours, specifically its walking and mountain biking routes (following the GR-11).
The life of Salvador Dalí
The area that Salvador Dalí once called home offers a wide variety of activities which provide an insight into the artist’s life. The Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres is the perfect place to explore the Empordà genius’s artistic creations. The artist’s Portlligat home and surrounding area provide an opportunity to experience the landscapes that inspired him first-hand. The Gala Dalí Castle in Púbol represents a unique piece of architectural heritage and is also open to visitors.
